How to use it
- Type your message.
- Tap a WhatsApp format or a fancy style to copy it.
- Paste it in the chat and send.
WhatsApp’s own formatting
WhatsApp turns symbols around your text into formatting: *text* for bold, _text_ for italic, ~text~ for strikethrough and ```text``` for monospace.
Since 2024 you can also start a line with "- " for a bulleted list, "1. " for a numbered list or "> " for a quote, and put `text` between backticks for inline code.
Formatting or fancy letters?
Formatting symbols only work inside WhatsApp chats. Fancy letters are real characters, so they also work in your WhatsApp name, your About and in other apps.
Questions and answers
Why does my message show the asterisks?
There must be no space between the symbol and the text: *hello* works, * hello * does not.
Can I combine bold and italic?
Yes: *_text_* gives bold italic in WhatsApp.
Is there a menu for this?
On most phones you can also select text while typing and choose the format from the menu that appears.
